If your company transports or stores hazardous liquids like oils, fuels, and chemicals, you are aware of the risk posed by a spill and the significance of spill control and containment.

When carrying or holding a variety of liquid goods, spill containment bunded pallets are now absolutely necessary. The shipping and logistics industries have long prioritised the efficient transportation of valuable and hazardous liquids. Not only is it essential to the safety of everyone who works in the supply chain to ensure that goods are safe and in a manageable condition while they are in transit, but it is also required to comply with regulations. In light of the growing need for secure shipping methods for chemicals, there has been an increase in demand for pallets that are not only strong but also capable of containing spills, and this is what we offer at Spill Station.

The Benefits of Spill Containment Pallets

Spill containment pallets are often made from polyethylene material, which is resistant to corrosives and common chemicals. On top of this, there are many benefits to the use of spill containment pallets.

They Save Time

Despite the fact that businesses will do their best to prevent hazardous materials from spilling while being moved, accidents do happen. These spills are extremely difficult and time-consuming to clean safely when normal pallets are used. Additionally, this is costly and can put employees or others in danger. However, spillage containment pallets automatically collect the hazardous materials when used, making clean-up significantly simpler.

They Last Long

The spillage containment pallets are made of high-quality plastic that is resistant to moisture, chemicals, contaminating dust and mould, and other factors. As a result, they are resistant to warping and have the ability to maintain their tactile force over time. This indicates that they can be used for more than ten years, making them extremely cost-effective.

Employee Safety

The possibility of a spill poses a constant threat to employees for businesses that frequently transport hazardous liquids. This risk increases exponentially if non-specialist pallets that have not been designed for spill containment are utilised. However, you can stop any liquid from escaping by using the appropriate spill containment pallets. This keeps employees from having to clean up the mess or coming into contact with liquids that have leaked.

Easy to Keep Clean

Pallets used for transportation are likely to require regular cleaning due to the nature of spill containment. The smooth, heat-sealed surfaces of plastic spill containment pallets resist moisture. As a result, they can be thoroughly cleaned with steam or other inexpensive methods. Therefore, plastic pallets can be used repeatedly without concern for sanitation.

Easily Stored & Moved

A lot of spill containment pallets are made to be transported and used in warehouse processes. As a result, they are designed to be moved effortlessly by pallet jacks or forklifts. They can also be stacked because of their structure and rigidity.

They’re Compliant

Spill containment that is both reliable and effective is useless if it does not adhere to the various regulations that apply to the transportation of chemicals. Therefore, spill containment pallets ought to meet all domestic and international standards.

Spill Containment Pallets Best Practices

Spill containment regulations must be strict in the workplace for businesses that store or transport industrial quantities of liquids as well as any liquids that are deemed hazardous or flammable.

FAQs

A spill pallet is a product designed to hold drums and other liquid containers on a grate suspended over a liquid tight sump. A spill pallet is used with  industrial containers like drums, barrels, or IBCs, so any leaks or spills flow into the "sump space" below.

The purpose of a spill pallet is to collect any spilled liquids. They do this by sitting under a container, so if a leak occurs, the liquid inside the drum flows into the spill containment pallet, which will hold 110% of the capacity of the largest container, thus preventing leaks from impacting the wider environment.

There are many reasons workplaces use spill pallet, including state and federal laws that require all businesses store chemicals safely. But beyond this here are a few reasons to use spill containment pallets.

  • They prevent hazardous materials from spilling or leaking in general.
  • Stop hazardous materials from causing contamination that cannot easily be stopped.
  • Provide safety to employees in the event of a hazardous spill.
  • Prevent dangerous chemical reactions that may occur.
  • Prevent dangerous environmental pollution.
  • Avoid damage to the workplace.
  • Avoid the need for a costly clean-up operation.

When you have the right spill pallet, you are aiding in the prevention of accidents and contamination in the event of leaks and spills occurring In the workplace.

But to choose the right size of pallet you need to know that each pallet usually matches the type of containment used. The primary factor is that the sump of the spill pallet must be able to hold the greater of ;

110% of the single largest stored on the spill pallet

or

25% of the total stored on the spill pallet.

If we use the example of 4 x 205L drums on a pallet we find that 110% of the single largest container is 225.5L (1.1 x 205L).

The total stored on the pallet is 820L (4 x 205L). 25% of this is 205L (820 x 0.25).

The larger of these to calculations is 225.5L. This means that the sump must have a minimum capacity of 225.5L

Some other things to consider include:

  • The type and size of the container
  • The quantity of the containers used
  • The types of liquids being stored or transported

There are two reasons the maintain your spill containment pallet. The first reason is to ensure that the size of the sump remains compliant. If the sump contains liquid then the capacity is reduced and it may not be able to perform the primary task of containing the full contents of a drum in the event of a leak.

The second reason is to prevent the possibility of incompatible chemicals combining and creating a dangerous chemical reaction. The cleaning process isn’t difficult however, and can be done quickly.
